I am very sorry it has been so long since I updated this collection. There were a few causes. I have been rather unwell, and not really with it enough to make sensible posts. I have also had some PC problems and after they were fixed Virgin Media has been booting me off line several times an hour. Finally, some family issues have been making demands on my emotions and energy. None of these was a big issue on its own, but they combined to make it very hard for me to do anything that required time online, and concentration.
Yesterday I had a real lift, a major boost to my energy for this project. I asked an artist if I could share his work – and not only did he say yes, but he told me that he’d been inpsired to create that work after wandering through this site. And thats exactly what I hoped would happen. I was feeling a bit down and frustrated because FFG and Green Ronin still aren’t answering there mail, and I’ve had a rough week health wise – but now I’m back on track.
I forgot to tell you – I’ve changed the artist index a little bit. I’ve indexed some artists under their internet ID names as well as under their family names. I freely admit it was mainly to stop me getting confused. I’ve also added an “about” page.
Woohoo! Visions Of Ice And Fire has now got 100 artists, and 300 works of art – a double landmark! I’m off to have a small celebration.
I’ve only got the letter G on my list – so the site is going to be HUGE! I’ve been surprised and immensely pleased by the response I’ve got from the artists. Over 80% of those I’ve contacted have replied – and I haven’t had a single refusal. As well as that, they’ve given me a lot of positive feedback – lots of nice compliments about how the site looks and runs, plus encouraging comments about the artwork as well. I’ve also had people telling me that the various art has inspired them … which is neat because that was the whole idea!
It has been a long haul to get this far, but it is getting much easier. I’ve almost got the WordPress formatting and graphics issues solved, and I’ve worked out a system to keep the process of contacting artists under control. The more encouragement I get, the more energy I have to keep improving the site.
The idea of a AGOT/ASOIAF art site that asks permission before posting art, gives full credit and encourages people to visit the artists own galleries seems to have surprised a lot of people – which says something very sad about how much art theft is going on around the net.
Hopefully the next big celebration will be when Fantasy Flight Games and Green Ronin finally deign to answer my letters, and maybe even give me permission to share work under their copyright. So many official artists have agreed, and it’s frustrating I can’t share their work yet. I’m not sure why FFG and GR are turning down the chance for a bit of free advertising – but maybe they don’t think that small
So many, many, many thanks for the support and encouragement. Keep looking at the art, keep the compliments and encouragement to the artist up, keep letting me know if I’ve missed someone good and keep coming back!
I can’t believe it. The page views have been flooding in – over 5,000 a day! I am definitely Jude-the-Not That Obscure Anymore, but it’s too late to use tha as my email!
After reading feedback on some forums I added a new page – The Galleries. This provides yet another way to navigate to the galleries, via the tabs at the top of the page. Hopefully this will be easier to find, especially for those less fluent in English.
I’ve also added a Links page. This allows me to give links to a much wider range of sites, and to offer an additional “thank you” to some webmasters who have been very helpful.
Lastly – I am still waiting on replies from Fantasy Flight Games, and Green Ronin Publishing. Keep your fingers crossed as if the say yes, there will be loads more stunning art I can share with you.
I’m assuming someone will eventually read this I need opinions about a couple of issues, as the collection seems to be growing really fast.
- Should I do a small list with the online nicknames/handles arranged in alphabetical order giving the real names and the links? It might make it easier for people to find an artist they are looking for. I’d keep it seperate from the main links list.
- In order to keep loading times down I set the limit for posts on a page to 12. Is this too few – or even too many?
It seems I may need to change my name to Jude The Not So Obscure After All. I have had an amazing amount of positive feedback, and over half the artists I have contacted have agreed to allow me to share their work. Also, the folks at Winterfell on Deviant art have given me a very welcome plug, which had an enormous effect on site stats.
I’ve been feeling my way so far, and adjusting to how things are working out. I’ve made several changes – some minor tweaks, and some major (including a couple of new pages.)Any suggestions would be very welcome.
At the moment I am only posting samples of most peoples work, because of the sheer number of images I will eventually post here. If you want me to change this policy, then please let me know.
I’ve struck a few ASOIAF art collections in various places round the net, but there are two things that make this site different. Firstly I will only post art with the permission of the artist. Secondly I want to keep copyright issues very clear. With this in mind I have contacted Fantasy Flight Games, and Green Ronin Publishing asking them to allow me to continue to share work under their copyright. Watch this sapce for the result! I am waiting on these agreements to post several artists work.
Finally – many, many thanks to all of you who have encouraged me so much – artists and viewers alike.
Jude The Obscure (VisionSOIAF)
Welcome to my new blog. As you can see I’ve started small, with only five artists featured so far, but I promise it will get much bigger. I’ve been concentrating on building the site, but I am now going to spend a lot more time contacting various artists and asking for permission to show their work.
I have already collected a list of around 150 artists with links and contact details, so as you can understand I won’t be contacting them all at once. If you haven’t seen one of your favourite artists yet, it could be I haven’t got around to their name. But please feel free to suggest names, especially if you can give me links to their galleries.
